Recently, there are numerous countries that are talking about gay rights, liberation and marriage. Well, before this and even up to now, while there are some countries that are leading the way for gender equity, we need to accept the fact that gender and sexual prejudices still exist and happen. As a matter of fact, it is even more evident right now to countries that are battling in the issues of gay rights and other issues about homosexuality. In this article, we will discuss some of the issues surrounding the implications of gay population at school. Specifically, we will divide our discussion into three (3) parts, which are in accordance to the level of education. These are at the primary school, high school and college. It is very important to do this in this way because there might be different intensities or gravity of implications of gay in different levels of education.

Implications of Gay in Primary School

On the one hand, primary education is the time when a person is learning things about for the first time. At first, children in this level do not personally understand the implications of gay or being a homosexual. Hence, they do not have personal prejudice yet against their classmates or friends who seem to be gay. As a matter of fact, most of these children do not know their identity yet, which means they are still not discovering whether they are gay or not. This is until such time when their superiors explain it to them like their parents.

Implications of Gay at School

It is in this light that the role of the parents and anyone older to these children is very important in honing their understanding to the occurrence of homosexuality and the implications of gay. Most of the time, children of this age only have a prejudice against gay children when their parents or when the older people told them negative things about being such. This is especially true in societies that are primarily macho-feudal and patriarchal.

Implications of Gay in High School

Secondly, after their elementary education, children will go to high school. At this stage, they are no longer that gullible when things are being explained to them. This is the stage when they are discovering the world using their own eyes and minds and not the others. Hence, they are now able to understand whether the implications of gay that they learned in the past are right or wrong. With those lessons, they can opt to retain it or correct. Nevertheless, according to many reports and statistics, gays and homosexuals are not out in the public yet at this level. Only few have the courage to be out in the wild and declare themselves as such.

Implications of Gay at College

Lastly, the implications of gay at college are different from the first two levels we discussed. This is because this is the time when they have already gone through what psychologists and psychiatrists call as identity crisis. This is the time when they can independently choose whether they will be gay or not or if they will accept gay people to their lives.

The implications of gay or homosexuality in general within a family can be in different levels. This is actually a subject matter of sociology, psychology and social science. I have said this because the acceptance of a family to their member who is gay is heavily affected by various things. Some of these are the society at large, their economic status and their historical background. I will explain all of these for you to have a better picture on what I am trying to explain.

Implications of gay to a family and the society

On the one hand, the implications of gay and homosexuality to a family would be significantly affected by the acceptance to it of the society they are living. Well, we need to accept the fact that once upon a time and even up to now, most of the countries all over the world find homosexuality as an abnormal thing or phenomenon even if it is quite common since the time immemorial. This is the reason why most of the gay people do not go out to the public. There was even a time that gay people are considered as ill people who are needed to be quarantined and cured.

Implications of Gay within a Family

Nevertheless, as time passes by, more and more countries are being more open to the concept of homosexuality and the implications of gay population. There are even some countries that accept gay marriage just like a normal marriage. However, mostly for pre-dominantly Christian countries, the acceptance to the gay population and homosexuality in general is still not the easy or welcome.

Implications of gay and the family’s economic status

On the other hand, the implications of gay within a family can also be heavily affected by their economic status. I have said this because I have read a story before that a boy was the only child from a poor family. When he grew up, he discovered that his preference is different from the rest of the boys of his age. He is starting to feel some weird feelings towards his other male friends or classmates and as time passes by, he discovered that he is gay. However, he cannot be gay out in the public since he needs to make a living for his parents who are ageing. He needs to find a job, which will be less likely to catch if he will declare that he is gay. We all know that some companies have a prejudice in accepting gay people to their workplace.

Implications of gay and the family’s historical accounts

Thirdly and lastly, the acceptance and implications of gay within a family can also be affected by their history. What I mean by this is that if they already have a history of a gay member in the family before. I am not talking about the genes because I totally do not believe that homosexuality is because of genetics. Instead, my point is that if a family has already a gay member before, then they are more exposed to homosexuality, which may mean that they can be more open if they will have a new gay family member.

Even in the professional realm, there are also various implications of gay at work. If you are going to ask me, these implications can be categorized or classified into four (4), which are according to the general prejudice of people towards homosexuality, depending on the type of work as we as depending on the societal acceptance as a whole and even depending on the type of gay. I will discuss all of these four in the sections hereunder.

Implications of Gay at Work

General prejudice and implications of gay

On the one hand, the general prejudice about homosexuality is one of the major factors that affect the implications of gay at work. We need to accept the fact that there are still some companies that are not quite open to accept openly gay people at their workplace. This is because of the general acceptance or non-acceptance of people to the idea of sexuality. Well, we need to understand and be patient about this since it is a fact that we were once at the time that homosexuals are visibly non-existent because they either not go out or they do not accept their homosexuality at all.

Implications of gay depending on the work

On the other hand, the implications of gay at work may also depend on the type of job. I am not trying to inculcate a stereotype on the gender and work type relationship, but the physical capabilities of gay over the other genders like lesbian, straight and transgender are different from each other. In other words, there is a physical requirement for every kind of job we have. There are some jobs that are specifically intended only for women, lesbian or even for gays. So, its implications would really depend on what kind of job or work we are talking about.

Homosexual implications depending on the societal acceptance

Moreover, another factor that also affects the implications of gay at work is the societal acceptance or non-acceptance to the issues of homosexuality. This is different from the first factor that I have discussed above because this one refers to the acceptance of some society to gay rights. For example, in some countries in the United States, they are already recognizing that homosexual people should have equal rights and opportunities together with other genders. Hence, they must not be discriminated whether what type of job is opened as long as the applicant believes that he or she can deliver the work properly and effectively regardless of the gender of the applicant.

Various types of gay and their implications

Last, but not the least, the type of homosexual also has different implications of gay at work. I have said this because there are some companies, for example, that do not accept transgender or those that are cross-dressers. However, they accept gay people as long as they would agree in dressing according to their sex, whether born as male or female. This does not mean that they encourage “closet” type of gays. It is just the attire of their workers or employees must professionally match with their environment.

If you want to know the implications of gay culture to the society at large, there are several aspects that you need to research on. As for me, there should be at least four (4) aspects you need to ponder on. These are about its implications to how people generally interact with each, to the political arena of a country as well as to the religion and even to the various economic activities. I will explain all of these aspects of the implications of gay culture in the following sections below.

Implications of Gay Culture to the Society at Large

Sociology and people’s interaction with others

Firstly, among the first aspects that are being hit or discussed when it comes to the homosexual or gay culture is about how the people accept it and then interact with them. This is because there might be relational differences between how a straight person may treat another person who is gay. These implications vary significantly depending on the awareness of the person to the gay culture and to their history and exposure. For example, if a person is exposed to many gay people in his place, then gay culture would no longer be a new thing for him. However, it would be different if a straight male was raised in a macho-feudal and patriarchal family, and then making friends with a gay person might be very unlikely. Maybe he would be able to overcome that prejudice when he matures.

Implications of Gay Culture to the Politics

Secondly, one of the major aspects of the society that is being affected right now by the gay culture is the politics. There are already some countries that are welcoming the laws upholding the rights of the gay community for equal treatments when it comes to job opportunities and other aspects of life. There are even some gay party lists that are engaged in the realm of politics in order to represent the voice of the gay community, which is still one of the marginalized sectors of many societies even up to know.

Religion and the Implications of Gay Culture

Thirdly, religion is also one of the factors that you need to research about when understanding the implications of gay culture. This is because the religion is one of the major references if a person will entertain the concept of homosexuality or not. For example, in the religion of Roman Catholics, homosexuality is generally accepted as human beings as long as they are not sexually active. This is because sexual intercourse, according to this specific religion, is meant for men and women to create life. Of course, this cannot be satisfied if gays will have sexual intercourse.

Implications of Gay Culture and Economic activities

Last, but not the least, you also need to understand about the implications of gay culture to the various economic activities of a society. This covers the job opportunities that are being opened whether it is “closet” gay or a cross-dresser gay. There are some companies that welcome gay, but with some limitations. However, it shall never be seen as a form of discrimination.

There are many spheres or aspects that we can talk about when it comes to the implications of being gay. There are those that are regarding the work, the family of the gay person as well as interacting in schools and even making new friends. This article will be specifically dealing with the issues and implications of gay in making new friends. In this regard, we will divide our discussion into three (3) parts. These will be about making new friends at school, at work and to the general public. I am doing it this way because I think there might be various levels of implications of homosexuality according to the place or bubble where a gay person is meeting new friends.

Implications of Being Gay in Making New Friends

Generally Making New Friends in the Public

On the one hand, when it comes to generally making new friends, its implications would be different if it is in the context of the general public like strangers meeting for the first time. For example, if a straight person is in a park and he wants to make friends with other people, his treatment towards the other person would be different if the other person is a gay, lesbian or transgender. It would be good if the straight person would be gender-sensitive and treat them equally; however, this is not the most likely situation that may happen. I have said this because most of us, even in this modern time, still have different perceptions when it is about homosexuality.

Gay Person Meeting New Friends at School

On the other hand, there are also different sets or kinds of implications of gay when they are meeting new friends at school. Of course, the values and perceptions of people at school are different as well. Aside from that, it may also depend on the level of school you are at, whether it is primary, high school or college. For me, primary school students are more innocent about homosexuality and they usually just depend on what their authorities, like their parents, tell to them. Further, high school students are more adventurists so they tend to be more open in meeting new gay friends but they tend to hold back to come out if they are the ones who are gay.

Implications of Being Gay in Meeting Friends at Work

Moreover, another variety of implications of gay in making new friends is in the workplace. I have said this because people act differently when they are in the public, at home, at school or at their workplace. This is because there are specific sets of ethics that are appropriate in dealing with other people. So, it is expected that professional people will be able to deal with gay people properly in the workplace. However, it would be different if they are already outside their work, for instance.

Aside from that, the implications of gay in the workplace may also different on the rank relationship. For instance, if the gay person is the superior, then his constituents would respect him better since it is a must. However, if the gay person is just a normal rank and file employee, then the treatment may be different depending on the level of openness of his boss.
